The people that interact with you on a daily basis – friends, colleagues, significant others and family members all play principal roles in your life. While it is impossible to choose who all of your colleagues are (even if you own your own business), and you definitely cannot choose your family members (as much as we may wish on occasion), you CAN choose your friends and significant others (as they typically start out as friends first). Take a look at those people that you consider to be friends. Do you honestly feel like you have built a community of supportive fulfilling relationships? Or does your list of friends resemble a patchwork quilt, because the relationships just developed and were not nurtured or deliberately created.

Now, I hear you thinking “I like my friends. Why would I want to deliberately look for friends, anyway?” The answer is, because the type of people that you spend time with is a direct reflection of who you are, what you feel and what you do. Tim has had the same group of three friends since high school. They are all twenty-five years old, but Tim is currently the only one of them that is employed. Tim now has the chance to become Manager of his store. Want to bet that his friends will find some way to put a negative spin on it for him? If you react similarly, or you find their reaction positive – I dare say you might have a winner. If you do this a few times, you will find yourself surrounded with like-minded people that you will feel truly connected with.

There is nothing wrong with looking to maximize the number of positive interactions that can occur each day. If you and your friends can nurture each other and improve the quality of each others lives, only good things can come of this. Using The Color Wheel To Help Your Watercolors

Having some basic knowledge of the color wheel when painting a watercolor can be very helpful. Color can change the mood of a painting, making a dark overcast day turn bright and colorful or anything in between.

There are several different palettes to consider. A standard palette in watercolor consists of New Gamboge Yellow, French Ultramarine Blue, and Cadmium Red. These are the primary colors which make up the triad of this color wheel. To make your own color wheel, make a circle, and place your yellow at the top. Think of your circle as the face of a clock, and place your blue near the imaginary “4″. Do the same with your red, placing it around the number “8″. Mix together your yellow and blue to make green, and paint this sample halfway between the yellow and blue. Do the same with your blue and red, making a purple color, and put this halfway between the blue and red. Do the same with your yellow and red to make orange. These new colors you have mixed are your secondary colors. You should have six colors on your wheel now.

Next mix your secondary colors with each other to make your tertiary colors.. Mix your secondary red with your secondary yellow, and place this new color between the two secondaries. Do the same around your wheel until each spot has been filled in, for a total of twelve colors. Keep this color wheel for reference as you paint.

You may also want to make some other color wheels. For a delicate, transparent palette, use Aureolin Yellow, Rose Madder Genuine, and Cobalt Blue as your primary colors and repeat the exercise above. This is my personal favorite, and these colors are usually found in my watercolor paintings. They give a soft transparent look and “lift out” well when making corrections. Using these colors only will help you to achieve a “high key” or light painting. Combinations of these colors cannot produce a strong dark, so if you want to use a full range of values, you will need to consider some other colors as well, such as those listed next.

A palette made up of more intense colors consists of Winsor Yellow, Winsor Blue and Winsor Red. Make a third color wheel using these pigments. (These colors are transparent also, but don’t lift out as easily as the previous wheel. ) They will give you rich dark colors.

Select the color wheel you would like to use and paint a still life using your wheel as a guide. Your painting should have a warm or cool (your choice) dominance. My paintings tend to be cool, so my compliments need to be warm. A complimentary color is one which is directly opposite another on the color wheel. For example, red is the compliment of green, yellow is the compliment of purple, and blue is the compliment of orange. Remember to choose one as a dominant color in your composition, and its compliment as a contrasting color. This will make your painting much more effective than if you use the two compliments in equal amounts.

So when you are painting, keep in mind your color wheel and your dominant and contrasting colors. The color’s temperature, value, intensity and compliments all are important in making your painting its best.

1. Get to know the couple before the wedding. Every minute you spend getting to know the couple in advance of the wedding pays off in wedding images that can reflect their unique personalities and their hopes and dreams for the life they are beginning together. By the time of the wedding day, the couple should know you well enough to think of you as a new or old friend whom they welcome.

2. Call the wedding planner before the wedding. If there is one, call the wedding planner and introduce yourself as the photographer. Wedding planners can make or break your day and their contribution to your shooting workflow can be immensely helpful. Get on their good side and stay upbeat and flexible.

3. Clearly set the expectations for photographs well before the ceremony. During your meetings with the bride and groom, establish the style of photographs they want to receive when the big day is over. Discuss what look and feel the photos should take on and any post-processing techniques they may be fond of. Do they want color, black-and-white, or sepia-toned images exclusively, or a mix of all three styles? Do they want a photojournalistic or stylized fashion look to the images or a more traditional formal approach? These are all details to nail down well before the wedding day arrives.

4. Give the bride and groom breaks where they can relax for a few minutes. This is also a good time to get more candid images of them kicking back and reflecting on the events of the day. No one likes to be “on” all the time and your sensitivity to this will be much appreciated.

5. Know your audience. Before the wedding ask the couple about any touchy relationships such as family feuds, divorced parents, and children, and have the couple decide how they want you to arrange the portraits in regard to these relationships. The last thing that you want to do is put a divorced mother of the bride with her ex-husband and his new wife for the family shot or feuding family members next to each other.

6. Be happy. No one likes a grouchy photographer. So often it’s true in photography and in life that you get back what you put in. You want happy people faces in your photographs; then that’s what you have to display. Be magnanimous, agreeable, and flexible even if it kills you and keep smiling and shooting.

How to Prepare for Your Acting Auditions

The first thing to do is to bask in the understanding that you are talented, that you have something to offer. Congratulate yourself for landing a chance to audition. This is the time to focus on your strengths, to find a way to reduce the stress in your life. Do not over think. Rather, focus on the story, the monologue and picture a successful performance.

After that, take the time to prepare as soon as possible. Remember that acting auditions must be taken seriously. Passion, interest and hard work is what makes a difference.

If there are casting calls, find a way to check out the format, the venue and the other important details that you have to know so that you can prepare well. You have to know what they are expecting to get out of the audition.

Here are some questions that you need to ask:

1. Will you be doing the auditions on your own or as a part of the act? In this way you can start collaborating with other people that you may build rapport as soon as possible. This is one way to fix the errors before starting your acting auditions.

2. How many minutes are you allowed performing? Will you be performing one or two acting monologues? In this way, you can measure the time of performance and be able to provide much needed impact in just a few seconds if you have limited time.

3. Ask if there would be a script provided or if it would be a cold reading, having the script in your hands or having an idea of the concept would be a big help for your character reference. This is one way to be accurate.

4. Who will be observing? You have to know this in order to be able to acknowledge the judges, their talents and to be able to give the necessary respect that each needs.

5. Be prepared to memorize a given script or your own script. Being able to memorize your part gives you more confidence and stability.

6. If you will be asked to create your own monologue, be as creative as possible. Let others do a critic on your monologue. Have friends over to watch and read your monologue. Practice with fellow actors who can provide constructive criticism. Family members are usually not the best judge for talent because they have the tendency to get biased especially with parents. It is better to get harsher but realistic comments from the experts.

Dubstep – A Short Introduction

Dubstep is a genre of electronic music that has been around for over a decade. In recent months, this subgenre has begun to receive a lot of public attention in dance clubs all over the world. As of late 2011, this particular style of music has recently started to spread throughout the United States like a tidal wave of heavy bass wobbles and hard-hitting kick drums.

The Tempo

The trait that makes dubstep easier to identify is the narrow tempo range. Although usually 140 beats per minute, some of the released tracks in this genre have varied from 138 to 142 beats per minute, still a very small range in tempo. In terms of music, these tempos allow for easy manipulation of alternating between half time and full time for hard-hitting breakdowns and half tempo switch ups.

The Beat

Another thing that dubstep is known for having is a heavy drum and choppy rhythm section. Typical of this subgenre of electronic music, this style likes to use shuffled, chopped and syncopated beats to produce a heavy, gritty, dirty, nasty sound. Heavy emphasis is placed on the kick drum and the other instruments in the percussion section within this genre of music. Unlike most styles of electronic music, this genre relies on longer, more interesting percussion loops to drive the music along.

The Wobble

Probably the most distinguishable characteristic of dubstep music is the “wobble” bass. This specific sound is created through the use of a synthesizer and is manipulated rhythmically using low-frequency oscillators to create heart stopping sound waves. The wobble bass is typically composed of sub frequencies that are felt more than they are heard. The wobble bass is usually accompanied by a simple melody or musical riff and the combination of the two, along with the percussion section, is used to drive the music.

The Drop

The drop is accomplished by creating a short break in the percussion of a track and then slamming the listener with a wall of noise made up of throbbing bass and an ultra heavy drum beat. The drop is the portion of the song that is often the most anticipated and a lot of work goes into building up the music before the drop actually happens in the mix. Generally, the younger your kids are when you come out, the better. Younger kids are more resilient and have not yet had a chance to develop many of the prejudices that teens or young adults have absorbed from society.

When you do come out, be ready to answer any questions your child might have, as honestly as possible. Make sure you give age appropriate information.

Ask your spouse to give you the courtesy to come out to your kids. It is much better if you do it rather than having them learning it from someone else.

Have a support system in place if things do not go well. Suggestions are reading material, a therapist, or resources on the COLAGE organization website.

If your child does not seem to handle the information well, make sure you meet with the school counselor and let them know what is happening. Also ask them to watch for bullying, if you are in a small community and word has gotten out.

Elena Lasco Plays Jazz in Spain

Elena Lasco’s jazz presents an eclectic mix. But this is eclecticism with focus, a focus that is provided by her perhaps unique musical personality. She is classically trained, out of a prestigious Moscow music conservatoire, no less. She was a child prodigy and learned the Russian greats, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. But then this was also the Soviet Union of Nikolai Kapustin, as jazz idiom composer of dots on paper, a writer who formalised music that almost sounds like it might have been improvised. Elena Lasco’s interest in jazz clearly derives from the post-war American greats, Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Errol Garner, Oscar Peterson, Thelonius Monk. And, unlike Kapustin, she does improvise. She also composes, and that’s where the eclecticism emerges.

At her recent solo concert in Teulada’s new auditorium, Elena Lasco exhibited not only consummate pianistic and improvisatory skills, but also she delivered wit and originality. This she presented her own variety of eclecticism, a character that paradoxically is no mixture. It is nothing less than her own complex statement.

She played Ellington’s “A Train”. But it’s not Ellington’s “A Train”, it’s “Don’t Take This Train”, a self-mocking variant of Strayhorn’s music. So here is the mix: jazz standard, reinterpretation by Elena Lasco, improvised upon by a performer of the same name and presented on a brand new Steinway. It was quite an evening!

“There’s That Rainy Day” follows and then personal takes on “Autumn Leaves” and “I Love Paris”. “Stella By Starlight” is followed by “A Sad Day” and then “Round Midnight” appears as something completely different, but with a feminine angle. “A Night In Tunisia” takes on a new feel, something more classically oriental than the original. “All The Things You Are” unfolds, and then Caravan, to return us to Ellington. “My Funny Valentine” is a sad song given a happy ending.

But while Hines, Peterson and Garner come to mind, so do Rachmaninov preludes, occasional pieces by Prokofiev, Tchaikovskian paroxysms and Chopin-esque lyricism. Musical quotes are peppered everywhere, sometimes obvious, sometimes disguised beneath an improvised sheen. The music has a brilliance throughout, but the wit and sophistication still shine through.

This is music that deserves repeated listening. Elena Lasco is a pianist, a composer and a performer. How’s that for eclecticism?
